Character Information

Character: Zoey
Canon: K-Pop Demon Hunters, post-canon
Age: 22
History: Link to movie plot. Link to her bitty blurb.
Possessions:
  • One bucket hat

  • An oversized hoodie with derpy on it.

  • Her bag, containing: phone (defunct), 2 pocket notebooks, 5 pens, another bag (with another bag), band-aids, 2 tinted lip gloss, an alarming amalgamation of hairties, a brush, an alarming amalgamation of carabiners, tissues, 20 receipts, an opened bag of candies that have all entirely yeeted themselves into every other pocket in there, turtle keychain.. Did you need to know this? No. Did you need to know she has a hot mess purse? Yes.

  • Weapon: Six shin-kal; ceremonial Korean blades. She uses them primarily for close combat, wielding three in each hand, but can also use them as throwing knives. They are summoned at will with spiritual energy, and can be stored in mystical hammerspace until then. Particularly effective at defeating creatures with demonic and related energy. They also make a pretty rad blackout supply in place of candles. (If she can't have all six as a fixed set, that's fine! Just let me know how many she'd be able to conjure up.)

    Powers/Abilities:
  • Very fit and athletic. Being a demon hunter AND a K-pop idol are both full-time, physically demanding skill sets that Zoey has put in the grind for. She's nimble on her feet, both for nailing her choreo and getting up in demon's face in the blink of an eye. She does more hand to hand than the other members of HUNTR/X, so don't underestimate her punches cuz she's not holding them back. Examples: skydived out of a plane to fight demons and land perfectly at her music venue and do her routine. Fought a gaggle of demons on top of a speeding train.

  • Able to tap in to spiritual energy. Back home, this meant she could sense the presence of demons and tap in to the power of the Honmoon. As she isn't as spiritually connected to the fabric of the Diadem, her abilities would not be as wide-reaching. It'd be more of an immediate area sort of deal, primarily for summoning her shin-kal or reading the vibe of a place for immediate dangers. (That being said, Zoey usually ends up handicapping herself anyway when left to her own devices because her first instinct is often not that the vibes are rancid. See also: seeing demons in plain daylight and blurting out that they were magicians. She tries.)

  • Dear lord the girl can talk so fast. Pros: Great for rapping. Cons: The Diadem does not have the diagnostic tools she needs. Have fun. Enjoy.

  • Application Questions

Who is the most important person in their life and why? What might be different if this person hadn't been around?
Two sets of answers to this. The first being the Sunlight Sisters as a general entity. Their music had a huge impact on Zoey both as an inspiration to pick up a pen and start writing lyrics herself, and a source of stability when she was growing up and unsure of where she was going or where she could be. The Sunlight Sisters were there for her whether she was in America or Korea and no matter what was going on in her home life. Until she actually found out what a home she could be herself in could feel like, their music is what made her dream of what it might be. It taught her how music could connect anyone no matter the language-- surely there would be people out there that would like her...!

And also, you know, Celine was a Sunlight Sister! And Celine recruited her to be part of HUNTR/X! And that's a HUGE DEAL??? ONE OF HER HEROES? MAKING HER A HERO? TO CONNECT FANS TOGETHER AND ALSO GIVING HER A NEW FAMILY???? Zoey would be living an entirely different life and would probably be far more depressed in a place that wasn't going to let her thrive. (Regretfully, her unintentional gaslight tendencies were very influential nnooo...)

Secondly, more importantly, HUNTR/X. Her family! Her girls! (and Bobby!!) Rumi and Mira mean everything to her. They are her pillars of stability, reeling her in when she's being Too Much but also allowing her the freedom to be herself. They even embrace it, encourage it, and see her personality as a strength! (Usually. Mostly. Enough to try and not rain on her parade too much.) They all genuinely complement each other, their differences lifting each other up and making them stronger. Sure, they had a Moment which absolutely been handled better (see next question), but they've come back stronger than before! Without all the sunlight that Rumi and Mira brought to her life, well... it wouldn't be great! If they hadn't been in her life at all, the feeling of being in between and never being understood would have crippled her.

In the theoretical world where she knew them and then ended up kidnapped to a strange new place that shoved debts in her hands and little else... she'd be strong! For them! There would be so many attempts to uphold the energy of HUNTR/X and do what she thinks Rumi or Mira would do! For them! For the fans! (God she wants to cry so much actually!!!)

Is there an event in your character's life that they'd do differently? How so and why?
"Our faults and fears must never be seen." A mantra that had been instilled into each member of HUNTR/X over and over and over again. A mantra that Zoey took to heart, of course, but was ultimately at odds with how Zoey exists. Zoey is too honest and too willing to look for the best in things-- and naturally expects to receive that in return.

She regrets how things went with Rumi's patterns more than anything. She wishes she'd had just a bit more time, a bit more awareness that something other than Rumi's voice had been haunting her. She wishes Rumi had trusted her more- or rather that she had done more to earn that trust. More than anything, she wishes she had trusted Rumi more. Rumi was still Rumi! Rumi was always going to be Rumi!

She should have just thrown her knives down and given Rumi the hug she needed but... She couldn't. She didn't. It would haunt her still if things had gone any differently.

... It does still haunt her a little. Trying to "make up for it" feels disingenuous to Zoey, but she's more determined than ever to make sure Rumi never has to feel like that again.

What's the greatest challenge you foresee your character facing in the setting? How might this impact their ability to adapt and in what ways will they confront this challenge?
She's really not great as a loner. She's extremely easily distracted. She needs some semblance of community to bounce around in and find purpose in being helpful. She has too many thoughts and too many feelings and is so, so gullible. She will be led astray but she will also be highly skeptical of random things. It's a constant race to see which of the dozens of thoughts bursts out of her mouth first and if it's something that is going to get her in trouble or not. Zoey is practically a poster child for undiagnosed ADHD which is difficult enough to manage in America, let alone Korea. The Diadem is not going to help.

Also she's honestly. Kinda used. To soft towels and couches and bath houses and carb-loading. The living conditions here are going to take a bit to swallow and her tummy is going to be so angry for so long.

But she's been dropped in enough situations that she's kinda used to life upheavals? So as long as she frames it like that... she'll try to make do. She does want to find a god to try and fight to send her home because her place is with her girls, but she's gotta keep herself in top shape for that! THE GODS AND DEMONS IN CHARGE WON'T KEEP HER DOWN. (This goal will change to fighting god to bring everyone back to Korea or to bring Mira to them, depending on what seems more feasible. She's flexible.)

What's the easiest thing you foresee your character adapting to in the setting?
She'll feel compelled to lend helping hands when she can, and her whirlwind of positivity could be uplifting for the right folks. She's going to get into trouble, but at least she isn't going to be a complete damsel about it. HUNTR/X has at least given her enough confidence that she won't be a complete nuisance...!

Seeing so many different kinds of people from so many places is going to be amazing, actually. That's going to be so amazing! Maybe a world entirely made up of misfits... isn't the worst? Minus the raiders. They're rude. She'll kick their butts. But she'll be soooo excited to meet actual magicians and demons that are Good Demons and miscellaneous amounts of other fantasy/sci-fi types. Amazing. Incredible. What's that? She's a demon hunter? Don't worry about it, you're all fantastic.

Except for you Jinu. One wrong move and she will KILL you for Rumi's honor. You better be the BEST BOYFRIEND or ELSE.
